Now That Thanksgiving is Gone

The preparations of making lists that include whom to invite, what to serve and cook, what type of table cloth or table decorations are needed, are now behind us. Until the next big holiday, Christmas. Then the process begins all over again. The stress of the seasons are upon us.  Holidays are meant to give and receive joy, not make us a bundle of nerves.

Thanksgiving is such a warm holiday. We acknowledge the fact as to how lucky we all are. We see others who are less fortunate than us and we thank God that our life is what it is.  We would like to help others, whether physically or monetarily, but we always say we will, but we mostly never do.

I want to take this time to have everyone think of one small thing they can do to make someone happy. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money or time, but one small thing that would make a difference in someone’s life.

Maybe it’s a chore, handing someone a few dollars so that they can buy a meal or perhaps pay a bill that has been haunting them.  Even offering to do a service to help them through the day. Taking someone to their doctor’s visit, picking up a prescriptions for them at the pharmacy, walking their dog, helping with grocery shopping or even helping to write out Christmas Cards.

Whatever the gift or offer, it isn’t little if you are at the receiving line.

My friends, to be thankful for what you have, you have to show it through the deeds you do for others. You yourself will feel uplifted and good about yourself even more, when you see the smile on someone’s face you have helped or assisted. Although some may not show outwardly, in their hearts they appreciate what you have done. Don’t let their attitude stop you or prevent you from asking if they would like some help.  Picture yourself in their position, it can be tough at times, needing help or assistance, but being shy or afraid to ask.  Do the asking and watch a smile appear on a strangers face or perhaps get a ‘thank you’ for a deed well appreciated.

Enjoy your holidays my friends.  Remember every day is a gift, why not share it with others.

And Thank You All for taking the time to read this post.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Of course we all have trees, shrubs and flowers in our gardens, but the garden I speak of is the garden of one’s life. What challenges or goals have we set for ourselves to grow within our lifetime?

There are many gardens that are filled with beautiful flowers and trees. Gardens that are green every day, making life seem wonderful. There are gardens filled with weeds, where nothing worth saving grows and looking at it makes you sad. Then there are the gardens that enable you to look into your heart and soul and help you decide what path you want to take. A garden such as this is doesn’t come by every day, but when it does, it’s wonderful.

It’s Not An Easy Task

No one can fully appreciate a caregiver, unless you are one yourself. It takes a lot of patience, understanding, and of course, the very best care you can give. If the patient is a friend or a neighbor, you can speak with family members about what the patient would like and try to make them feel more comfortable. They might have suggestions, maybe not, so you go with the flow, hoping that your efforts are appreciated. They might get irritable, but you do your best to understand their situation. You are a friend, there when they need you. Isn’t that what friends are for? You have a choice to continue to care for them and accept their quirks or unappreciative behavior or tell them they have to find someone else to care for them.

However, what if the patient is your spouse? Then it becomes even more difficult. Even though your spouse loves you very much and you love them, they might become difficult and demanding. At times it might feel like they are biting your head off. They are in the difficult position of being sick, unable to do anything, losing the control they had of being able to do their regular daily routine. Unable to show you the love they once had, which came so easy to them. They look at themselves now and feel less than perfect, vulnerable, in pain and angry because of this ailment.

Picture yourself, sick, with no strength to even pick up a fork or to get up and walk when you were an active individual? Picture your caregiver, who is your wife or husband, looking down at you with sadness and despair seeing the person they love feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed. Unable to do now what they did. The things you two used to do together are now on hold for an undetermined length of time. You, as the patient are feeling the strength and life from your body weaken and abandon you, leaving you vulnerable.

If you know someone who is a caregiver, give them the credit they deserve. It’s not easy to look at someone daily and only watch someone slipping away or watching a patient that has lost his or her self-esteem because of the condition they are faced with. Giving of themselves to care for others.

MEETING BY CHANCE is a book, available in paperback, Kindle Edition and now in audio book, which I have written about one such caregiver. Her love of her aunt helped her daily, when it came to showing kindness and patience. She learned to overlook a lot of the difficulties that come along with care giving. In time she became aware of her aunt’s past private life making the daily routine of caring for her feisty and elderly aunt seem less difficult.

Soon to be released: Haven of Kindness –  The story of a nurse, who throughout her younger years nurtured and cared for the sick. Now during her retirement, she finds that the caring never stops and the dreams she wanted to fulfill for her retirement mean more to her now than ever before.

Halloween Creeps Me Out

Never liked it. I can not remember when I enjoyed going Trick or Treating when I was a kid…..I guess it is because it is always dark so early that night and always cold with a brisk breeze in the air. All the houses are dark and dreary. There are cobwebs hanging from trees, not to mention the toilet paper swaying in the breeze. There are children dressed in scary costumes, some are cute though, but there are some that are downright frightful. The doorbell rings into the early evening….ding, dong, “I will get this one”, ding, dong, “You get this one”, ding, dong, “l will get this again”, ding, dong, “You better get this one”, ding, dong, “Lock the Door” and “shut off the outside lights”. I might sound like the Halloween Scrooge, if there was ever one, but certain holidays hold a place in my heart and Halloween is not one of them.

I know the children love it. They are all dressed up in costumes of their favorite character and I do admit that some of them are just adorable…..You know even though I do not care for it, I enjoy my grandsons when they come to the door in their costumes with their faces filled with anticipation that grandma will give them a truck load of candy….this part of Halloween is well worth it.

For those of you who love Halloween, just be careful out there this Halloween night and be sure you accompany your children or grandchildren. Let them enjoy the evening that they have been waiting for, but make sure it is safe. Our children are the love of our lives.

What Is Your Excuse?

Was there something you always wanted to do when you were younger, but didn’t? How many times did you say you were going to do something but didn’t?

Don’t think you are the only one this has happened to. There are many people who have experienced this. They were disillusioned or discouraged when they were younger and now that they have the opportunity to follow their passion they are afraid or do not have the self-esteem they once had when they were younger.

Was it fear of failure? – There was a time you wanted to go ahead and experience something new, but if you failed, you were afraid you would be laughed at or ridiculed.

Were you disillusioned? – Did someone tell you not to do it because it wouldn’t be right for you?

Were you discouraged? – Was there someone who discouraged you to the point, where you now forgot about it? However, deep down inside you regret listening to that one person or persons and feel like kicking yourself. Could it be because now that you are older, you feel you can’t follow that dream?

I say take all of those reasons above and throw them in the trash. Pick yourself up and go and follow your hearts. Never let anyone change your mind. It doesn’t matter how old you are. You have experience behind you. You can look at yourself in a different light now that you have the opportunity.

When I think back about the things I wanted to do when I was younger, I laugh to myself, because not only did I achieve being an artist and writer, I achieved my self-respect and built up my self-esteem. You can also. Just because you are older, doesn’t mean you can’t fill that gap that has been there for so many years.

Take a look at yourself in the mirror. What you will see is a beautiful person, that can take control and follow their heart. If I can, you can.

The years have gone by quickly and as we get older they seem to be going faster. You only have one life to live. Live it. Enjoy life and what life has to offer you.

Start by making a list of things you wanted to do when you were younger. Now delete the ones that you think are now ridiculous and circle the ones that seem a possibility. From that list cross out the ones you really aren’t interested in any longer and highlight the ones that have been crossing your mind from time to time. Now work on that list and see what fits your needs and fulfill your dream.

Good luck my friends. Keep saying to yourself, I can, I can and you will.
